Overview:

KCE were contracted by Muswellbrook Shire Council to complete the 5.5 kilometre upgrade of Thomas Mitchell Drive. The contracted works involves the widening and reconstruction of Thomas Mitchell Drive from the New England Highway to the Mount Arthur mine main entrance in numerous stages. The project remains on track to be completed by the end of August 2014.

Scope of Works:

• 5.5km of pavement widening and reconstruction
• 25 000m3 of bulk earthworks
• Stormwater drainage pipes and pits
• 80 000m2 of pavement construction
• 70 000m2 of pavement stabilisation
• Kerb & Gutter
• 5km of wire rope and w-beam protection barriers
• Primer seal, and Two Coat Seal
• Asphalting of intersections
• Line marking
• Traffic Control & Management
• Revegetation
• General Concreting

Highlights and challenges:

• All works are required to comply with requirements set by RMS standards and specifications and by Muswellbrook Shire Council
• Due to the volume of traffic that utilises this road, a key emphasis was placed on timely delivery, and mitigation of the impact of works through staging, community consultation and notification
• The full 5.5km upgrade of the heavily trafficked Thomas Mitchel Drive was constructed under full traffic control conditions
• Works are nearing completion in zones 1, 2a ,4 and 5, with 4.5km of the road now reconstructed. Works have now commenced in Zones 3 and 2b
