Duration: 34 weeks

The project was a design and construct project for Taylor Construction, to develop a 4ha site for a new Masters Home Improvement store at Heatherbrae.

Scope of work:

• Rehabilitation of existing land features, buildings and former land use
• Import more than 60 000 tonnes of bulk filling and earthworks to level the site
• Extensive stormwater system incorporating infiltration to ground in permeable soils
• 1.7Ha under roof
• 2.2Ha new car parking including more than 550 parking spaces
• Loading docks, delivery and heavy duty pavements
• Retaining walls
• Construction of new turning lanes and minor upgrade to the Pacific Highway

Highlights and challenges:

• The sandy site, part of the Tomago Sandbeds catchment, forms part of the water supply for the Hunter Water Corporation. The drainage system incorporated treatment of runoff through various devices and infiltration of rainwater to the sandy site soils
• KCE developed a cooperative working relationship with Taylor Construction to deliver a quality job within a compressed construction program
• Challenges that were overcome included working together to progress the site during early stages withstanding continuing changes and development of the design
• Taylor achieved completion and handover of the site to agreed time and quality objectives
• KCE assisted Taylor to achieve significant cost savings to the project
